PLAY MECCANO PLAY is an ensemble of 16 musical robots made out of Meccano parts, electro-motors and musical instruments from Europe, Africa, Asia and America. SOUL

SOUL has a video projection in the background, and a sound sculpture in the foreground.  The sound sculpture is made of a record player that samples the voice of one of the best soul singer ever. This record player does not turn only a 7-inch record, but also a flute ensemble slowly rotating over a ventilator that plays the pipes in a ghostly melody.  The ensemble has its moving shadow cast on the screen, where an African string instrument comes and vanishes in a 3 min loop, backing the voice of one of the best blues singer ever. With its black and blue atmosphere the whole automatic orchestra pays homage to the Great Black Music.

PAPER ORCHESTRA

Paper is the central element of this automatic fourteen-pieces orchestra. Using seven blowers/bellows and as many fans, it rustles, rattles, dances and amplifies the sounds. Five paper drums–Irish bodhran , tambourine and Moroccan bendir —introduce the composition. They bear a stripe of paper glued to the actual membrane. Under the effect of the fans, the paper beats the drums and improvises unpredictable rhythms. Six paper organs join the drums and play their harmonic suite until the tutti- the whole orchestra-which closes the first part of the composition. The music starts up again with the rain of paper made with a sheet of paper cut into strips, moved by a fan. Spinning slowly above a blower/ bellows, the paper flutes add their ghostly melody to this rain, swept from time to time by paper snakes: a large bolt of paper cut out and moved by the air from a tangential blower/bellows whose ends twist and clatter on an amplified plank.

MECANOID

A complete orchestra shaped into one rectangular machine. The machine has six percussive, melodic and harmonic functions. Between the visitors and the machine, a light source is projecting the shadow of the mechanisms on the wall, in a big scale, filling the room entirely with the changing sounds and moving image of the kinetic sculpture.
